Etsy vs Shopify vs Your Own Site Calculator

Which keeps more profit: Etsy, Shopify or your own website?

Etsy charges per sale. Shopify charges a monthly plan plus card fees. Your own site costs hosting plus card fees. Put in your price, costs and monthly sales and see what each one leaves you each month.

Your numbers

Etsy profit a month
$628.00
Shopify Basic profit a month
$674.20
Own site profit a month
$693.20

At 40 sales a month, your own site keeps the most: $693.20 a month.

Fees are one cost. The Maker's Costing Workbook works out the true cost of every product, so the profit here is real.

How the sum works

  1. Etsy, per sale: $0.20 listing renewal, 6.5% transaction fee on price plus shipping, and 3% plus $0.25 payment processing (US, no Offsite Ads).
  2. Shopify Basic: $39 a month on monthly billing, plus 2.9% plus $0.30 per online card payment.
  3. Your own site with Stripe: 2.9% plus $0.30 per card payment, plus the monthly site cost you enter.
  4. Profit a month = sales a month x (price plus shipping minus your cost minus postage minus fees), minus any monthly charge.

Questions

Where do these rates come from?

Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and payment processing page (read 30 September 2026), and Shopify's pricing page for the Basic plan (read 1 October 2026). Paying yearly lowers the Shopify plan price. Rates outside the US differ.

Why does Etsy win at low sales?

Etsy has no monthly fee, so a few sales a month cost less there. As sales grow, the monthly plan is shared across more orders and the lower card fee starts to win.

Does this include Etsy's built-in buyers?

No. It compares fees only. Etsy brings shoppers to you; your own site needs you to bring them.
