What does Etsy take from a sale, and what do you keep?

Etsy charges a listing fee, a transaction fee and a payment processing fee on every sale, plus an Offsite Ads fee when an ad brought the buyer. Put in your price, shipping and costs, and see the fees and the profit that is left.

How the sum works

  1. Listing fee = $0.20 for each sale (the listing renews when an item sells).
  2. Transaction fee = 6.5% of the item price plus the shipping you charge.
  3. Payment processing (US) = 3% of the total the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax, plus $0.25.
  4. Offsite Ads fee = 15% (or 12%) of price plus shipping, only on sales an Offsite Ad brought in, never more than $100 an order.
  5. Paid out to you = price plus shipping minus the fees. Profit = that minus your cost to make it and the postage.

Questions

Where do these rates come from?

Etsy's Fees & Payments Policy and its payment processing help page for US sellers, read on 30 September 2026. Sellers in other countries pay a different processing rate, and some pay a regulatory operating fee as well.

Why does the shipping I charge get a fee too?

The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, so free shipping with a higher price costs about the same in fees as a lower price with shipping added.

Does the sales tax cost me anything?

The tax goes to the state, but in the US the 3% processing fee is worked out on the total the buyer pays, tax included. On a $30 order with $2 of tax that adds 6 cents.

What price do I need to make it worth it?

Start from the real cost of one finished item, your time included, then check the price here after fees. The batch cost calculator on this site works out that cost for makers.

This was one batch

The Maker's Costing Workbook does this for every recipe you make.

Type each material once, with the pack you buy it in. Build recipes from them, log the batches you make, and the cost per unit, your margin and your materials stock all follow. One payment of $19.
